Foundation stone for new sewage treatment plant laid at Baina

VASCO: PWD Minister Sudin Dhavlikar on Sunday laid the foundation stone for new sewage treatment plant at Kattem-Baina.

Dhavlikar unveiled the plaque in the presence of Power Minister Milind Naik, Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida, PWD Principal Engineer J S Rego, Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Sumita Usgaokar, PDA Chair-person Krishna Salkar, Councilors Jerry Fernandes, Sinita Landez and Shekar Khadapkar and others.

Speaking on the occasion, Dhavlikar said it was the dream of Naik to have a modern sewage treatment plant at Baina, which is fulfilled. “Almeida and Naik have been constantly following up with me about construction of the new plant, which is the second of its kind in the State,” he said.

plant, Dhavlikar said the modern sewage treatment will utilize one-third area than the conventional area required to set up a treatment plant. “The new plant will consume 30% electricity than what is actually used to run the earlier sewage treatment plant,” he added.

“The water generated from the new sewage treatment plant will be used for gardening purpose and so far only Zuari Agro Chemical Ltd has come forward to use this water;” he said.

Almeida, while complimenting Naik for taking up the project on war footing, said Naik was continuously following up with the PWD minister.

Power Minister Milind Naik stated that with the construction of the 20 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant with pumping main and ancillary units at Vasco, the entire Mormugao taluka will benefit from it.

“Residents from the area were always complaining about the smell emitting from the old sewage treatment plant. Once the new sewage treatment plant is commissioned, it will not emit any foul smell and the water generated out of the plant can be used for gardening,” said Naik.

Later in the day, Naik laid foundation stones for an electricity substation, laying of underground electricity cables and up-gradation of the Rose Circle ground at Sada.
